Investing in Community Assets

For over thirty years, Main Street America districts across the country have been revitalizing local economies by focusing energy, resources, and people-power on improving their older and historic commercial districts. Central to these efforts is the preservation and maintenance of the historic properties that give Main Streets a sense of place, a rootedness, and of course, a thriving economic engine.

Calling all Main Street Coordinators!

The National Main Street Center (NMSC) is pleased to offer the Historic Commercial District Revolving Fund, made possible through generous support from the 1772 Foundation, Inc. All Main Street America (MSA) and UrbanMain (UM) Coordinating Programs are invited to apply to partner with NMSC to bring this program to your city, region, or state. In 2019, the Historic Commercial District Revolving Fund will provide up to 15 small revolving loans to groups of business owners in up to three MSA or UM districts within the boundaries of one MSA or UM Coordinating Program. Business owners will use these loans to support highly visible improvements to buildings and storefronts. The program is intended to provide local Main Street programs with an additional “tool” in their economic vitality tool-box and help stimulate local economies using an innovative funding mechanism. Over the next three years, the revolving fund will provide 0% interest loans in two to three competitively selected Main Street communities.

The application to participate in Historic Commercial District Revolving Fund is open starting August 21, 2019! The deadline for applications is September 11, 2019.

Facade Improvement Pilot Program

In 2016, we launched the Main Street America Façade Improvement Pilot Program, with generous support from the The 1772 Foundation, Inc. This three-year program made $80,000 in no-interest matching loans and grants available to support highly visible improvements to buildings and storefronts.

Main Street America partnered with the Texas Main Street Program’s team of experienced leaders and expert design staff to focus the pilot in two competitively selected Main Street America and Texas Main Street communities: San Augustine, led by San Augustine Main Street, and Texarkana, led by Main Street Texarkana. The Main Street America Façade Improvement Pilot Program’s impact has been very positive, and we are so grateful for the incredible work our partners in Texas have accomplished.
