June 11, 2021 | Community Spotlight: Celebrating Pride Month 2021 on Main Street | By: Abby Armato, Communications Coordinator, Main Street America |

June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month! From small business owners to public artists to local leaders, join us this month to amplify the impact of the LGBTQ+ community in your Main Street district. Get started by downloading our Pride Month on Main Street social media graphics, purchasing Pride Flags to hang in your downtown (can't find them locally? Get them for free here), or looking up local LGBTQ+ nonprofits to partner with this month.

Looking for more ideas on how to celebrate in your community? From public art installations to supporting LGBTQ+ businesses to amplifying nonprofits supporting the LGBTQ+ community, explore a few of our favorite celebration initiatives from around our Network below.

Waukegan PrideDrive 2021. Waukegan Main Street in Illinois kicked off Pride Month with their second annual PrideDrive. Working in partnership with several local organizations, the Main Street program dressed the downtown district in Pride flags and encouraged local businesses to add their own rainbow storefront decorations. The community was invited to drive through the decorated downtown and part of the residential neighborhood to experience the festivities. Many of the cars that participated in the drive were also decorated for the occasion. Learn more.

West_Chester_w_cap.jpgStorefront Decoration Competitions. West Chester BID in Pennsylvania is taking rainbow flags to the next level with their Pride Month storefront decoration competition. The Main Street program is encouraging local businesses to decorate their storefront windows and share a picture of their celebration with the organization. During the first week of July, one participating business will be randomly selected to win a raffle prize. Learn more.

Spotlighting Local Partners. Many Main Street programs across the country are using their digital voice and influence to encourage their community members to support local LGBTQ+ nonprofits. The Milk District in Orlando, Florida, is using their social media channels to amplify Zebra Coalition: a Florida-based nonprofit assisting LGBTQ+ young people facing homelessness, bullying, isolation from their families, and abuse. In addition to spotlighting a supply drive for Zebra Coalition, the Milk District also promoted their small businesses who added special promotions to benefit the Coalition. Learn more.

Pride! On the Plaza. Oklahoma City’s Plaza District is celebrating Pride Month with the return of their Live! On the Plaza series. On hiatus last year due to safety concerns, Live! On the Plaza traditionally features artists, live music, special business hours, and more. To celebrate Pride Month, the Main Street program is spotlighting local LGBTQ+ nonprofits and artists as well as offering branded Pride! On the Plaza rainbow t-shirts. The night will end with a late night drag show! Learn more.

Plaza Pop-Ups. Each month, Downtown SLO’s Mission Plaza features a different public art pop-up installation created by local cultural nonprofit. This month, the Plaza Pop-Up has been designed by Gala Pride and Diversity Center, a nonprofit supporting and empowering people of all sexual orientations and gender identities in California’s Central Coast. Titled “Love Notes,” Gala Pride and Diversity Center’s downtown pop-up centers welcoming all community members at the heart of their installation. Over 150 community members participated in creating the pop-up, and visitors are encouraged to explore the community’s art and messages of love and belonging. Learn more.
