Now more than ever, the local restaurants that make our Main Streets thrive need our support. That’s why we’re thrilled to let you know about a new campaign from American Express designed to help rally communities around local restaurants, including dining establishments, coffee shops, bakeries, and all other eateries. The American Express Order In, Help Out campaign will encourage customers to support local establishments with takeout and delivery.

According to the American Express Independent Restaurant Insight Study, 89% of small, independent restaurant owners say they depend on takeout orders to stay afloat.[1] The study also found that Tuesdays are one of the slowest days of the week for restaurants, so consumers can help make a difference by sharing their takeout orders from local restaurants using #TakeoutTuesday with their social community to inspire others. Apply to the American Express Shop Small 'Order In, Help Out' Innovation Challenge!

From promoting curbside pickup hours to helping restaurants provide meals to first responders, Main Streets have been rallying their communities to support local restaurants since the beginning of the pandemic. Now we want to hear how you’re creating innovative marketing campaigns to encourage your community to support local restaurants. To apply, design and run a local marketing campaign that brings the Order In, Help Out movement to your community or share a successful effort you’ve recently ran that supports local restaurants.  You can tell us about your efforts in the American Express Shop Small ‘Order In, Help Out’ Innovation Challenge application for an opportunity to win! 
 
Entries will be judged on Strategy; Innovation & Engagement; Feasibility; Need/Response to COVID; and Results and Impact. The first-place winner will receive $5,000. The second-place winner will receive $2,500, and five third-place winners will receive $1,000 each in recognition of their efforts. Winners will be recognized at the 2021 Main Street Now Conference and may be invited to take part in a session highlighting their innovative ideas. 
 
Who is eligible? 
Applicants must be a Main Street America member as of February 16, 2021 to be eligible to submit. Be sure to review the Official Rules here.  
 
How do you apply?
Entry is open starting today, February 16, 2021 at 12pm CT and will close at 12pm CST on Wednesday, March 17.

[1] The American Express Independent Restaurant Insight Study was conducted by Teneo on behalf of American Express. Consumer data is based on a survey of 1,004 Americans who visited a restaurant 2+ times a month before the COVID-19 pandemic. The anonymous survey was conducted online January 11-16, 2021. Data was weighted to reflect the demographic composition of the 18+ population of the U.S. based upon gender, age, education, race and region. Restaurant owner data is based on an online study conducted among a sample of 500 respondents who are owners/managers/directors/CEO/etc. of an independently owned restaurant with fewer than 50 employees across all locations. The anonymous survey was conducted online January 8-18, 2021.
