Just Released! Main Street's Comeback

January 12, 2021 | Just Released! Main Street's Comeback |

We are excited to announce that Main Street’s Comeback and How It Can Come Back Again, the new book by Mary Means, is now available.

Covering more than 40 years of the Main Street revitalization movement, the book recounts the origins of the Four Point Main Street Approach in the 1970s, chronicles its growth into a nationwide movement, and describes why its principles and practices continue to be relevant today. Perhaps most importantly, the book brings the stories of the people and places across our network to life and lays out the case of how and why Main Street organizations will be essential to the nation’s recovery from the COVID pandemic.

Mary’s book couldn’t be more well-timed. We hope you’ll not only take the time to read it yourself but also share widely and use it as a tool to educate others about the incredible impact and power of Main Street.

Main Street’s Comeback is currently available via Book Baby and Bookshop.org (and Amazon, but we'd rather you try to order from somewhere else first!). Please help get the book into more people’s hands—and available in more local bookstores—by taking the following steps:

  1. Ask your local bookseller to stock the book by sharing this flyer with them. You might also consider cohosting a virtual launch event – Mary might even make a Zoom appearance!
  2. Share with your mayor and other elected officials, your funding partners, volunteers, and other stakeholders. Simply copy and paste this language into an email, personalize, and press send!
  3. Post on social and include in your e-newsletters – here are sample posts you can use to spread awareness of this powerful book.

Early Buzz

Mary Means, Main Street’s Founder, has given us a definitive how-to can-do must-read book that for the first time tells the full story of this remarkable and no longer invisible accomplishment.

Tony Hiss, Author – The Experience of Place

Mary Means is one of America’s most creative thinkers. When America’s small-town main streets were down and out, Mary conceived a revolutionary new approach to community revitalization… and spawned a movement that has helped bring thousands of small towns back to life. This book explains how and why this approach worked and why it is more relevant today than ever.
