An Update to the Main Street America Network about COVID-19

March 13, 2020 | An Update to the Main Street America Network about COVID-19 | By: Patrice Frey, President and CEO, National Main Street Center |

Dear Main Street America Network,

Community is at the heart of everything we do, and as COVID-19 begins to have an increasingly significant impact on communities across the country, I wanted to share what we at Main Street America are doing in response. Obviously, the situation is fluid and changing rapidly. Our foremost concern is for the health and safety of the individuals who make up our network. As an organization, we are taking precautions to limit exposure by implementing a temporary remote work policy for our staff and limiting travel.

And as you heard earlier this week, we are also actively monitoring recommendations around mass gatherings in preparation for the Main Street Now Conference in Dallas this May and will be following recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Beyond these immediate concerns, there is obviously a set of larger and longer-term challenges that we will have to confront as a network. In light of broad economic uncertainty, supply chain interruptions, and guidance from public health officials to stay home as much as possible, the impact on small businesses and local economies is already significant and looks likely to become even more extensive.

Amidst this uncertainty, however, one thing is clear: Main Street organizations have an essential role to play in supporting businesses during this difficult period, and our Main Street leaders will be even more important when fears about the virus subside and we are actively supporting businesses and communities in the recovery process.

Main Street America is already strategizing ways in which we can offer support to Main Street organizations in the midst of this unfolding situation, as well as once the pandemic subsides. I will have more to share on this very soon.

In the meantime, we are compiling existing resources, opportunities, and community response examples and will be sharing them on this webpage. If you have information you would like to share, please email

All my best,

Patrice Frey
President and CEO of the National Main Street Center
