“Downtown Chillicothe has experienced rapid growth and investment in recent years, most easily seen in our vacancy rate dropping from 28% to 4% in the past 15 years. It is because of passionate and progressive community partners that our downtown is a thriving focal point in our community.” ~Ben White, Director of Main Street Chillicothe
Located 90 miles northeast of Kansas City, Mo., Downtown Chillicothe serves as the historic, civic, and cultural center of the community. Chillicothe is an ideal hub for shopping, dining, sports and recreation as well as business and industry.
As you stroll through town, public art and placemaking projects help bring the district to life–23 larger than life murals, a mobile parklet, and greenspaces with seating, flowers, and art line the street. Enjoy the newly constructed Silver Moon Plaza, a beautiful pocket park with fountains and benches. A mobile parklet has been placed around town to allow visitors to take a break or have lunch. Another new addition to the community is the 5,000-square-foot Cultural Corner Art Guild & Gallery, a co-op artist working space with revolving monthly art installations and weekly classes.
If you’re headed to the 2018 Main Street Now Conference, see firsthand how the arts have transformed the community and take a historic walking tour of downtown Chillicothe on Tuesday, March 27.
FUN FACT: In 1928, Chillicothe became the birthplace of one of the greatest innovations of modern times: commercially sliced bread, helping to launch the phrase, “That’s the greatest thing since sliced bread!”
