"Where is Main Street?" Helping Visitors Find Their Way

Wayfinding tools help to focus visitor information, simplify the built environment, and answer questions that visitors have. “Where is Main Street?” “Why should I go there?” “What can I expect to see and do?” Ultimately, wayfinding helps Main Street explorers tell better stories. The Traverse City Downtown wayfinding system involved diverse stakeholders in its planning, design and implementation, resulting in the most successful initiative the DDA has undertaken in recent years. Hear about the steps (and missteps) as part of a comprehensive review of Main Street wayfinding.


Mark VanderKlipp, Corbin Design 
Mark VanderKlipp, EDAC is the president of Corbin Design of Traverse City, Michigan, a national leader in user-centered wayfinding that has helped cities throughout North America improve how people access and experience their environments. Mark serves as a national board member of the Society for Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD), an organization dedicated to connecting people to place. Mark is a frequent speaker and writer for industry events and publications including the International Downtown Association, Urban Transportation Monitor and International Sign Association. 

Rob Bacigalupi, Traverse City Downtown Development Authority 
Rob Bacigalupi is the Executive Director of the Traverse City Michigan Downtown Development Authority, an organization that provides economic development, marketing, events and parking services for downtown Traverse City, Michigan. Rob sits on the Bay Area Transportation Authority Board of Directors and formerly served as Chair for that organization. He was recently appointed to the Governor's Complete Streets Advisory Council. Rob has a Bachelor of Science in Urban Planning from Michigan State University and a Master in Real Estate and Construction Management from the Daniel's College of Business at the University of Denver.
