Main Street graphics must engage both the community and the consumer, or they will take their business elsewhere. Most graphic communication from Main Street organizations and small businesses tends to get lost in the crowd. Does your logo really represent your organization’s essence and aspirations? Do your publications effectively portray their contents while maintaining your brand? This session examines the relationships between graphic elements, including text, image, and color, so your graphics will stand out from the clutter and truly say what you mean.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand how graphic design can position a Main Street organization or a small business.
  2. Identify ways to improve attendees' existing graphic identities.
  3. Learn how appropriate graphic design (i.e., font, color, image) can successfully communicate with your intended audience.
  4. Implement simple but effective graphic design rules to improve all graphic communication.

Anthony Rubano, Illinois Historic Preservation Agency
Anthony Rubano is a Project Designer at the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency in Springfield, Illinois, where he has provided design services to over 70 Illinois Main Street communities throughout the State. He reviews proposed changes to historic Illinois properties under a variety of state and federal regulatory and incentive programs. A part-time faculty member of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he has consulted across the country on historic preservation and downtown revitalization issues. His work, along with that of his 4 colleagues, has garnered awards from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers, and the Illinois chapter of the American Institute of Architects. He holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.

Darius Bryjka, In Alliance
Darius has extensive experience in historic preservation at local, statewide, and national levels. An architectural and graphic designer with a strong preservation ethic, Darius specializes in developing strategies for historic downtown revitalization. As Principal of IN(ALLIANCE), he promulgates the effectiveness of proper preservation treatments for individual buildings as well as entire communities. Formerly a project designer for the Illinois Main Street Program at the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (IHPA), he provided architectural, design and training services to numerous communities across the State. He continues to spearhead the “got mesker?” initiative, which he began with IHPA in 2004 as a first-of-its-kind effort to identify, preserve, and educate about historic sheet-metal facades found in many of America's historic commercial districts. A frequent public speaker, Darius wrote and delivered presentations and workshops on a variety of architectural and historic preservation topics in numerous communities.
