"Main Streets in 3D" Communities

Harness the power of 3D as a revitalization tool

MS-Google-3D-AnnouncementIn July, we announced the five communities participating in the Main Streets in 3D project, an exciting collaboration with Google and Igloo Studios that is designed to empower Main Street programs to use 3D technology in their revitalization efforts. Read our blog posting for a summary about this project and to check out some cool Google SketchUp images.

All of the communities have had on-site training workshops in Google SketchUp™ and Google Earth™ and have gotten started with creating 3D models of downtown buildings. Click on each communities' name to read the updates on their progress as of October 2010Fairmont, West Virginia; Downtown South Orlando, Florida; Jefferson, Georgia; Milford, Delaware; and Oregon City, Oregon.

Each community has its own twist on how 3D Main Streets will be used as a revitalization tool and will spend a year experimenting with it. At the end of the project, each Main Street will serve as a model for the community development world to show how 3D technology can change the way we approach revitalization and historic preservation. At the end of the year, we will share best practices and case studies on their innovative ideas.

Want to Learn How to Use SketchUp and Earth, Too?

To better understand the process behind modeling your downtown, read this case study about Main Street McMinnville, which explains each step that this small Tennessee town took to create a volunteer-driven effort to put its downtown in 3D. Special thanks goes to former McMinnville Main Street Main Street Manager Chris Wilson, who helped make Main Streets in 3D happen.

For another primer on Google SketchUp and Google Earth and for suggestions on ways a 3D Main Street can be used in your community, read "Visualizing Your Community With Google Earth and Google SketchUp" in the January-February 2010 issue of Main Street Now

Where can I go to learn more about this technology and how our program can use it?
