Criteria for Main Street Coordinating Programs

In order to use and delegate the use of the Main Street® name, brand, and methodology, Main Street Coordinating Programs must enter into a Trademark License Agreement with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and acknowledge that their coordinating program organization meets the following 10 criteria for Coordinating Programs.

The Coordinating Program must:

  1. Demonstrate success by
    • showing that its participating local programs are incrementally demonstrating higher levels of reinvestment in their Main Street districts;
    • attaining a high level of positive visibility and credibility within the state, region, or city; and
    • annually submitting a roster of nationally accredited Main Street programs to the NTMSC
  2. Work effectively with participating communities by
    • maintaining a written agreement with local programs that incorporates the Main Street Approach, Eight Principles, and name/trademark use;
    • engaging local programs in coordinating program sponsored workshops and training;
    • communicating with local programs regularly; and
    • providing training for its participating communities
  3. Maintain a strong preservation ethic, with an excellent track record of preserving historic Main Street buildings and other historic resources.
  4. Communicate the organization's sense of purpose and overall direction through a mission statement.
  5. Administer a comprehensive program with an annual workplan; job descriptions for all staff; and an annual budget.
  6. Employ experienced professional staff that is able to provide communities with basic services that empower local Main Street leaders to successfully implement the Main Street Approach. One full-time staff person must be assigned to coordinate the Main Street program.
  7. Provide a program of ongoing training for professional staff. Coordinating program staff is expected to attend the national coordinators' meetings and to attend the National Main Streets Conference at least once every two years.
  8. Partner with the NTMSC by maintaining an active National Main Street Coordinating Partner Program membership and by providing regular updates to the NTMSC through coordinator reports and other means.
  9. Establish adequate and stable funding and resources from both public and private sources to maintain an annual operating budget that meets minimum designation requirements.
  10. Maintain an ongoing relationship with the National Trust for Historic Preservation's regional offices, statewide partners, and state advisors.
